April 2014 Newsletter

Hello Everyone,

James Gelling PresidentSpring is finally here which brings us to an end of a very disappointing snowmobile season. Mother Nature just wasn’t very cooperative this year to give us enough snow to ride locally, hopefully she will be kinder to us next year. We had such high hopes this year of being able to use our new snowmobile groomer , check out the new route to Mina. and to show off our new signs along the snowmobile trail. At least the Black Hills had a very good year so we didn’t have to travel very far to go snowmobiling. .. So now time has come to get out our summer toys and spend a summer enjoying the outdoors . Just a reminder that May 1st. is the deadline to get all our trail signs removed.

We will be having our pizza/swim party Sunday April 6, at the AmericInn, which is located on the east side of the Lakewood Mall, swimming starts at 1pm and the pizza will be served at 5pm. If you plan on attending please let Glenn Imberi know ahead of time so he can order enough pizza’s. His cell number is 380-3829.

It was decided at the last meeting that we would have an unofficial spring campout at the Richmond State Park campground the weekend of May 16-17 which is the free state park camping weekend. Everyone is responsible for making their own reservations if you want to participate.

Our annual fall campout and membership drive will be at Wylie Campground Sept.12-13, 2014. Camp sites 61-68, 77-81, & 87-89 have been reserved for the Driftbusters members. You need to call 605-626-3512 and ask for Vicki to reserve your camp site and be sure and tell her you are a Driftbuster member. We will be basically following the same agenda we have in the past several years. The go-karts have been reserved for Sat. evening from 7:30-9:30 pm. More details will be posted on our web site this summer.

Our last meeting of the season is Thursday, April 3rd. at the Pizza Ranch at 7:30 pm. We will be voting on the election of new officers and 2 board members. So please be sure and attend and .volunteer for one of these positions. I would also like to remind all the new members that were signed up this year that this will be your last chance to get your free buffet meal. Just come early to the back room to get your free certificate . .Congratulations to Dan Rohbach for signing up the most new members. He will be getting a certificate for a free pizza a month for a year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for giving me the chance to be your club president for this past year. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. The Driftbusters is a great club to be a part of.

Hello Everyone,

2012 SDSA convention fun in Aberdeen, SD If you were not in Aberdeen Nov. 9 and 10 for the SDSA Convention you missed a rocking good time with the host club, Aberdeen Drift Busters.  There was plenty of fun and good food for everyone.  The meetings at the convention were informative as always and the hospitality rooms were excellent.  The live and silent auctions were a great success thanks to all the people and businesses that donated the items. The host club hopes that everyone enjoyed themselves and had a rocking good time.

I am your new District 3 representative, which includes Aberdeen Drift Busters, Jim Valley Snowmobile Club, Day County Trailblazers, and Dakota Ditch Drifters.  My wife, Gina and I live 10 miles west of Aberdeen on Mina Lake where we have lived for 25 years, we have a son, Jordan that is 21 years old and works in Aberdeen.  I look forward to working with the board of directors for the next 2 years and hope that we can get many things accomplished for the South Dakota snowmobiling community.  It is a great pleasure that my club thinks enough of me to nominate me for this position for our district and I hope to get many things done with the group.  I am always open for any input that pertains to snowmobiling so please feel free to contact me.

SDSA board of directors meets at state conventionI would like to thank all the Drift Buster members that worked tirelessly to make the convention an outstanding success.  Thanks again.

Driftbusters annual snowmobile club campoutHello everyone, It is hard to believe that School is starting and summer is coming closer to an end. I know that I have enjoyed the summer months with camping and boating with the nice weather that we had this year since it started in March with temps in the 80’s but the reality of it is that the snow is going to come sooner than later so we need to start to get our winter activities together.

Our first line of business will be the membership meeting Sept. 6th. at the Pizza Ranch at 7 pm. Then the fall camp out is coming up next weekend at Wylie campground Sept. 14th. and 15th. Friday night typically involves a night around the campfire with some good munchies. Saturday night will be the potluck meal. The Club will provide the meat, beverages and utensils. Club members are asked to bring a dish to pass. The go-karts will be from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Wylie Thunder Road.

The Driftbusters are hosting the State Convention in November this year so we will need a lot of extra help so please come forward and lend a hand. I know that committee has been meeting all summer long working on getting things organized for the convention. Please contact email Kelly Weaver or email Ann Nagel  to volunteer your help.

Just a reminder our annual dues are due in Sept. Now if you prefer you can download the form or pay them on line on the membership page of our new web site. If you have a new email address please  email Cheryl Gelling  so she can continue to keep you informed of all activities.

The fall campout will be held at Wylie the weekend of September 14 & 15.   Even if you aren’t a camper, there is still plenty of ways to have fun at the campout.  Friday night typically involves a night around the campfire with some good munchies.  Saturday will include time to enjoy the go karts at Wylie Thunder Road.  Saturday night will be the potluck meal.  The Club will provide the meat , beverages and utensils.  Club members are asked to bring a dish to pass.  Then stick around for snowmobile stories around the campfire.  Watch the website for more details as they become available.

For those wishing to make camping reservations, a block has been held for the club.  Campers must call the Parks and Recreation office directly at 626-3512 (ask for Vicki) to make your reservation.  Explain that you are with the Aberdeen Driftbusters Group and that you need to place your name on one of the sites being held under that block.

Camper or not, find a time during the weekend to stop out and enjoy the activities and your fellow snowmobilers.    It’s a great way to kick off the season and to introduce new snowmobilers to our group.

Snowmobilers will be having a rockin’ good time in Aberdeen this November 9 & 10.  While there may not be snow on the ground, there will plenty of winter action going on at the 2012 South Dakota Snowmobile Association (SDSA) convention where “Snowmobiling Rocks!”.  Hosted by the Aberdeen Driftbusters Snowmobile Club, the event will be held at the Aberdeen Ramkota Convention Center.

Christine Jourdain of American Council of Snowmobile Associations speaking @ SDSAFor the first time, we are excited to have Christine Jourdain with the American Council of Snowmobile Associations joining us for the convention.  We are also happy to be partnering with one of our own local businesses, First Place Parts, who is bringing nationally known trainer Mike Duffy to Aberdeen on November 10th for an Avalanche Awareness, Avoidance and Rescue education session.  In addition to snowmobile related vendors, we are interested in having attendees display their vintage sleds during convention.  More information can be obtained from Jim Weaver at 605-216-5309.

The Convention begins on Friday with meetings of the SDSA Board (9 am), Governor’s Snowmobile Advisory Council (1 pm), and Snowmobile Club Presidents (5 pm).   Following the Beer N Bull session will be the annual SDSA auction of snowmobile related items.  The highlight of the evening will be John Green’s presentation of his original painting of a snowmobile scene that will be auctioned to the highest bidder.   Saturday includes the SDSA annual meeting, trade show and educational sessions.  The convention will conclude with the SDSA Awards Banquet and special entertainment.  The weekend will be jam packed full of snowmobile information.  More convention information and registration details can be found on the Aberdeen Driftbusters snowmobile club website.  Registrations and payments can also be made online for the convention at the club’s website.

Aberdeen Driftbusters’ Newsletter
April 2012

Thank you to all who have come to the meetings and events this past year.  I know how hard it can be to stay committed to this sport when there is no snow outside.  Your support and participation is greatly appreciated.

snowmobile trail groomer

Jim weaver and Sunny Pence look over the groomer for the Dakota Midland Trail manged by the Driftbusters Snowmobile Club.

Thank you to Jim Weaver for all of his time and commitment as Trail Boss! And thank you to all of the trail leaders and volunteers.  It is your volunteer help and commitment that makes the Dakota Midland Trail a reality.  Trail signs have been or are in the process of being pulled.  Thank you!

Your new board of directors following the election at the March meeting is as follows: President – Jeff Thorne, President Elect – James M. (Mike) Gelling, Past President – Sunny Pence, Treasurer – Sharmie Jensen, Secretary – Cheryl Gelling with the help of Tracy Olson, and Board of Directors are Jim Friedt, Mike Gelling (appointed by President Sunny Pence to complete remainder of vacant position), Corey Gelling and Lee Olson.

Just a reminder that the Driftbusters will be hosting the 2012 convention, so we are going to need volunteers to help make this happen. Be prepared to say “yes” when asked to help on a committee or volunteer at the convention. It is never too early to start asking for and gathering donated items for the silent auction and/or door prizes. Let’s work together to make this another memorable convention for all of our SDSA friends.  The date of the SDSA Convention is November 9 & 10.

Thanks to everyone who helped out and attended the Pizza and Swim Party that was held Sunday, March 25. We apologize for miscommunication on when the Pizza was to be served and will strive to do better next year.

Discussion was held regarding a spring campout at either Wylie or the Brown County Fairgrounds for the weekend of May 18 & 19.  Please look for another e-mail regarding this event later this week.

The fall campout will be held at Wylie the weekend of September 14 & 15.  Mark your calendars now and call 626-3512 to make your reservation.  Explain that you are with the Aberdeen Driftbusters Group and that you need to place your name on one of the sites being held under that block.  More information will be coming.

Tony Schmitt, who is replacing Ryan Raynor as trails specialist, plans on attending our April meeting so he can meet everyone.

The next meeting is April 5 at 7 PM at the Pizza Ranch.  Thank you for allowing me to be your president this past year.  I pass the gavel on to Jeff Thorne, your elected president for the 2012-2013 season. Have a great summer. See you on trails next year!
